OSHA mandates training for personnel who are required to wear respirators during their work activities. The initial training class will review the correct use and care of respiratory protection equipment. Course participants will conclude the class by being fit with an appropriate size and brand of respirator. Participants must be clean shaven and provide proof of medical approval to class in order to be fit-tested. Participants will need to bring the brand and model of respirator required by their employer.

In this course, we will cover the importance of electrical safety, concepts of electricity, hazard recognition, effects of electricity on the body, safe work practices, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

The purpose of this training course is to give you a basic understanding about how to use electricity safely in your work environment. The online Fire Safety and Extinguisher Training course may be taken to fulfill the training requirement for those who do not have a fire extinguisher required as part of their work environment. This course reviews safety and emergency procedures for preventing and responding to a fire emergency; common ignition sources of fires and good practices for the storage of flammable and combustible materials with the goal of preventing fires; and reviews what to know and do ahead of time in order to be prepared for a fire emergency; the proper steps to take in the event of a fire; and when to use a fire extinguisher and how to handle the extinguisher by putting out a simulated fire.

The user will learn how to correctly label chemical containers, store incompatible chemicals safely, and identify proper storage of flammable liquids.

This course will provide valuable safety information on fume hoods; description, purpose, when fume hoods should be used, operation, best practices, who to contact when service is needed, and situations to avoid.

This course will provide laboratory personnel with information on how to manage spills (chemical, biological, or radiological materials).

This course will introduce you to the Laboratory Safety Manual and will outline information that will assist you in working safely in the laboratory. Participants will learn responsibilities as related to laboratory safety, basic laboratory safety practices, to assess hazards in the laboratory, to use resources to determine hazard control measures and to incorporate information from safety references, such as the Laboratory Safety Manual and SDSs, into work practices.

This online course will provide you with the skills and knowledge to use proper ergonomic techniques when working in a laboratory.

This course provides valuable information about the origin and content of the NIH Guidelines, and why ISU personnel must follow these guidelines rigorously. The NIH Guidelines refer to the BMBL as a guidance document for laboratory practices, biocontainment levels, risk assessment evaluations, and relevant information on pathogens.

This course will benefit employees who use computer workstations. Information will be provided on musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risk factors, proper workstation setup and available ergonomic computer tools. Information on available ergonomic resources will also be given.

This training includes a review of topics that have been identified through radiation safety audits as needing regular review.

This brief course is an introduction to the identification of packages that may pose a threat to ISU personnel.

Whether someone has been driving a tractor for several years, only a short time, or never you will learn the features of a tractor, how to identify tractor hazards, safe operating practices, the function of rollover protective structures, how to prevent run over accidents, inspection and maintenance, as well as the importance of maintaining your skills through refresher training.

We will also review the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Agricultural Standard, which regulates all employers and employees who operate agricultural tractors. The guidelines in this training outline potential tractor hazards and provides recommendations to eliminate, isolate, or minimize those hazards.

The ISU Emergency Response Guide video was developed to increase emergency situational awareness within the ISU community based on significant incidents on university and college campuses around the country. The video provides simple emergency response procedures for the campus community to follow in the event of an emergency situation and augments the information on the Emergency Response Guide, emergency action plans and emergency maps.

On-site training is available by request for groups of ten or more.

This course is available to provide base-level training in a programming / counseling skill called Motivational Interviewing (MI). The course was developed based on an established course in Kinesiology (KIN 494 - Practicum in Motivational Interviewing). There are 6 online modules that guide the user through the foundational principles and skills of MI. At its core, MI is a collaborative, respectful, and goal-oriented communication style wherein the coach or practitioner and the client or patient work together to identify and strengthen personal motivation for making this change. MI is a foundational skills for health coaching and has documented utility for promoting behavior change. However, like any skill, it must be practiced. The online training provides a solid foundation to help individuals begin to use and apply this valuable skill.
